Cheap electricity plans being vetoed by your spouse?

One of my first obstacles when I decided to find a way to generate cheap electricity was that my wife really hated the idea of turning our home into some hippie-dippie eyesore. She’s still not entirely convinced that cheap electricity doesn’t  have to mean ugly electricity, but I’ve gotten permission to proceed with caution ;-) .

Now, remember, my reason for starting this quest isn’t that I’m cheap. It’s that electricity is one of our larger bills each month (our cars are paid off, so really we just have our mortgage) and if we ever want to retire on a rapidly dwindling investment account… we need to be able to reduce our expenses. I grew up in California at the height of the first environmental movement, so I’ve been exposed to these ideas before. And, now that green energy is finally becoming cheap electricity, with retirement on my horizon I decided it was time to get serious.

For some of you reading this, your spouse might be convinced simply by your saying, “Cheap Electricity!” I know for many, those are the magic words ;-) . For my wife, they didn’t go quite far enough. Sure, she’s interested, but she’s not yet willing to dive into future alternative energy sources without some concern for the aesthetics.

In doing my research, I found this interesting article for how men can convince their wives that persuing cheap electricity is a worthwhile option. It’s definitely a starter piece–it’ll just give you some direction on where to begin your research and a couple common issues your spouse might raise. It’s a little light on the details, but it’ll help you figure out where to research first and the author is clearly a mindreader because these are the exact same questions my wife asked when I first suggested looking into cheap electricity.

Check it out at http://solar.calfinder.com/blog/going/the-wife-acceptance-factor/ and let me know how the discussion with your spouse goes! (By the way, for ladies looking to do the convincing, the article will suit you as well.)
