Build Your Own Residential Windmill

I was so excited to come upon this Make video on building your own residential windmill. I think you’ll enjoy it just as much as I did.

My residential windmill kit arrived yesterday and it’s been such a temptation to open it early but I promised my wife I’d wait until the weekend when I had time to look everything over. If you’ve purchased your windmill kit, too, post below so that we can talk about it! (And if you’ve already started putting yours together… You’ll have to tell me how it’s going!)

The thing that I’m finding most interesting right now in my “make your own electricity” quest is how much interest people have in the topic. I could talk about this stuff *all* day long, and I would have expected my coworkers, family, and neighbors all to have tired of the topic after about 5 minutes of it, but people are still asking me questions. And they’re great questions at that! For instance, one of my neighbors asked if residential windmills could look like the darling Dutch windmills or if they had to look like the wind turbines you see on wind farms–she wanted the more picturesque version, of course. (And this is a question I don’t know the answer to, so if you do, please let me know!)

At first, I wasn’t surprised by everyone’s interest–it’s definitely an idea whose time has come, but I figured it would just be a passing one. I mean, residential windmills… Not exactly a “cool” topic! (Although, if it helps fight global warming, I guess it *is* a cool topic ;-).)

So, it’s been really great getting the continued support and interest of my friends, family, neighbors and coworkers. And to those of you in those groups who are stopping by my site today for the first time–welcome! Please visit often to see just what I’m doing to build my own residential windmills so that I can make my own cheap electricity.
