Renewable energy investing 101

Now that I’ve been on the wind-power path at home for almost a year, I’ve decided to expand my focus on being green and its financial benefits by looking into renewable energy investing. I’m just getting started, but so far, I’m really liking what I’m learning.

One of the things I don’t like about investing in traditional stocks is that I’m essentially “buying into” the company’s mission statement and practices by buying a stock. Since it’s really hard to find companies that I feel are genuinely helping the world, I’ve been reluctant to put my money in the market.

But, with the rise in popularity of green stocks, I feel much better about handing off my hard-earned money. After all, I know these companies share at least one of my values and that’s something I’m more comfortable getting behind.

I haven’t yet picked any specific stocks to buy (if you have any you especially like, feel free to leave a comment), and of course, if I ever do mention renewable energy stocks I’ve bought, you’ll want to do your own research. I may know a heck of a lot about wind power at home, but I know very, very little about investing in the market.

How do you feel about investing in the renewable energy market? Do you feel like it’s just a passing fad? Or something more long lasting? Does it make you feel good knowing you’re investing in a company that cares about the environment (or at least says they do), or would you rather find companies that have other values?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you decide where and what to invest in!
