Alternative Energy Funds: Do they exist or is it just a scam?

As I work to create cheap electricity for my home, I keep running into sly mentions of alternative energy funds from the government. I know that there are tax credits for people who establish solar power for their homes, but beyond that, my knowledge is sketchy at best.

Of course, tracking down these alternative energy funds would definitely help to appease the wife–I know one of her concerns (aside from the “this is going to turn our house into the neighborhood eyesore”) is that I’m going to spend a bundle on my pursuit of cheap electricity only to get to the end of the process and either have spent more than we’d possibly spend on electricity bills in the next 20 years, or have a system that’s entirely worthless.

So, on my list of things to research is definitely the logistics of tapping alternative energy funds. As my search turns up resources, I’ll add them to this category, and in the meantime, feel free to share your own resources if you have them! Wouldn’t it be great to pay for all our cheap electricity using these alternative energy funds instead of using money from our own pockets… There’s no way the wife could say no then. (It’s a good thing she isn’t reading my blog yet, isn’t it.)

UPDATE: Too bad I don’t live in San Diego anymore… There’s an alternative energy funds program there going into effect in July. For more on that, visit:
