Future alternative energy: why I’m including wind power in the mix

When I first started looking into future alternative energy sources, I began my search by researching how to use solar power to power my home. But I quickly realized there were some significant drawbacks. Where I live in North Carolina, we get a lot of sunshine, but we also get weeks and weeks and weeks of rain and heavy cloud cover. It’s the abundance of rain that keeps everything green, but it was also enough to make me think it might be smart to try both approaches and see which was the better longterm future alternative energy source for my home.

Which is what led me to include wind power in my options. I can still well remember being fascinated by the Windmill Fields of California, and I still find it amazing that wind energy can be converted into cheap electricity for home use.

Sure, wind power may not be the one and only future alternative energy source, but it deserves a place on your research agenda even though solar power is the first kind of alternative energy source that comes to mind for most of us looking into reducing our electricity bills and use more green electricity. I do still plan to include solar power in my future alternative energy plan, after all, I came of age in the 70s when solar power was oh-so-trendy. But, for my particular home electricity needs, I’m looking into a plan that combines solar power and wind power for best results.

Something you’ll need to consider, too, is what your home owners association (if you have one) has to say about alternative energy sources. Do they forbid the windmill that you’ll need to wind power your home? Are they skeptical about solar panels? Or are they embracing future alternative energy sources for your neighborhood?
